Thought to be the most important and well preserved of all the Cathare castles with sheer drops o, either side. At an altitude of 800 metres, this fortressca n be dated back to the 1st century BC when it was occupied by the Romans. In 1258, the castle divided the border between France & Aragon & continued to do so for 400 years

This amazing gorge which marks the border between Aude & the Pyrenees Orientales can be crossed by car or on foot; The ermitage St Antoine access only by foot can be found carved into the rocks during the 7th century is definately worth visiting . During the summer months, you can visit the souvenir shop at the entrance to the gorge and there is a small café take a snack at the Erimtage Café
